Three Routes Chalked Out To Prevent Entry Of trucks Into Heart Of City
Hubli: The National Highways Authority of India has proposed three alignments for the Hubli bypass road linking Kusugal Road and Gadag Road with the Pune-Bangalore highway, to prevent the entry of heavy vehicles into the heart of the city, and so ease traffic congestion. .
The proposed bypass will divert the Mumbai, Karwar and Mangalore-bound heavy traffic originating from Solapur, Bijapur and Hospet towards Pune-Bangalore road, without these trucks having to enter the city and pass through Chennamma Circle in downtown Hubli, as at present.
The first alignment, which is 8.5 km long, will touch Pune-Bangalore highway at the Gabbur Cross. The 1O-km long second alignment is further away from the city, while the third one, which takes into account the long term expansion of the city, is 18 km long.
According to the design prepared by NHAI, land acquisition for the second alignment would pose minimum problems as it runs along an existing 10-ft wide cart track. This would be neither too close nor too far away from the city limits, and is thus most convenient for truckers.
All the three alignments would require construction of two overbridges on HubliGadag and Hubli-Bangalore railway lines, criss-crossing their path. The second
alignment is, however, most acceptable to local officials as well as the business community.
At present, around 2,000 iron and manganese ore-laden lorries originating from Toranagal and Hospet and bound for Karwar and Mangalore ports pass through Hubli, each making an average of 20 trips per month. Apart from causing traffic congestion, they pose a hazard on city roads.
A local gynaecologist and former chairperson of the. Sri Siddharooda Mutt Trust Committee, Pushpa Joshi, was killed on the spot when an ore-laden lorry rammed into the car in which she was travelling with her family, near Anchatgeri on Karwar Road on Sunday.
Following the accident, Hubli-Dharwad police commissioner Narayan Nadamani has fixed speed limits for-vehicles on two stretches of city roads. But given the volume of traffic, the maximum speed limit prescribed by him is not possible to achieve on those stretches.
Road Transport and National Highways advisory committee member Mahendra Singhi said local ministers Jagadish Shettar and Basavaraj Horatti should impress on Union transport and national highways minister of state K H Muniyappa of the need to take up construction of the bypass at the earliest.

HUBLI: Software majors, such as Infosys, IBM, Neilsoft and 24x7 Customers Pvt. Ltd., have confirmed their participation in the "IT (information technology) Investors' Meet" scheduled to be held in Hubli on Saturday.
Addressing presspersons after launching the website for the event, www.destinationhubli.in, here on Monday, M.S. Srikar, Deputy Commissioner, Dharwad district, said efforts were on to invite companies which were keen on taking up expansion plans in Hubli.
To a question, he said the objective of the investors' meet was not confined to marketing the Hubli IT Park. "We want to make investors aware of the potential of the twin cities (Hubli-Dharward) for the IT industry. The IT park is suitable for small- and medium-scale software industries. But big companies in the sector require separate land for setting up units. During the meet, we will highlight the availability of land," he said.
Mr. Srikar said invitations had been sent to more than 150 IT companies. "We are receiving confirmation of participation. Merely getting more participants does not serve any purpose. Our focus is on getting the attention of 50 to 60 potential investors who are keen on investing in Hubli," he said.
Mr. Srikar said the post-lunch session of the meet was for marketing Hubli as a destination for investment. During the session, the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) and the Karnatak Chamber of Commerce and Industry would make presentations on infrastructure improvements and business opportunities. To a question, Mr. Srikar said about 100 hectares of land around the twin cities had been acquired by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board, and it could be used by big IT companies.
Response cell
Mr. Srikar said a response cell had been set up at his office in Dharwad for giving information on the investors' meet. The website gives details of the event and the names and phone numbers of persons to contact for information.
HDMC Commissioner P. Manivannan told presspersons the corporation would provide adequate facilities for companies interested in making investments, and it had set up a project cell.
The State Department of Information Technology, HDMC, Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation, Software Technology Parks of India, BIC Society and the BVB College of Engineering and Technology are organising the meet.

Bangalore: Legal education in the State is expected to reach new heights with the setting up of Karnataka Kannoonu Vishwavidyalaya. The first law varsity of the S tate would take its birth in a month if the State Go vernment acts on the r eport submitted b y university special officer J S P atil. Accor ding to the r eport available with Vi jay T imes, the university is proposed to be set up at a cost of Rs 4 2 cror e . All the 72 law colleges affiliated to various universities would become a part of the proposed university . A 52acr e KSRP land has been identified for setting up of the university campus in H ubli.
The university would have 30 centr es of e xcellence including intellectual property rights, rehabilitation, juvenile delin quency , women rights and child rights . For the first time , the university would offer certificate and diploma courses in law besides distance education. It would continue to offer both thr ee-year and five-year LLB courses .
The university also proposes to offer LLB ( honours ) course at Hubli campus with an intake of 60. A three-month long bridge course would be offered for enriching written and spoken English at beginning of each academic year .
The report also mentions that environment science, general science, psychology , criminology and commer ce and management can also be taught with legal education.

Hubli: A website, www.destinationhubli.in, would be launched soon to facilitate the investors’ meet to be held here on May 20. This would provide full information about Hubli as the destination for investments in Information Technology and ITeS sector.
The event will be organised by the Consortium of District Administration along with Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, KEONICS and IT-Department with the cooperation of the State government. Local engineering colleges and BIC Society, a society constituted for marketing Hubli-Dharwad in IT space, have shown special interest in the event.
In a press release, KCCI IT Committee chairman Santosh Huralikoppi said that the State government and CM Kumaraswamy have shown interest in making the meet a success by attracting potential investments in the Information Technology, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Biotechnology spaces.
More than 150 delegates from various large, medium and small companies have been invited and there have been positive responses from a few of them. Special arrangements for travel and stay have been made for the delegates.
Santosh said that the incentives announced by the Chief Minister Kumaraswamy for Hubli IT Park have started showing positive results. Neilsoft, a Pune based company with over 500 employees, has taken over a Hubli based company and is starting its operations in IT Park with 10,000 square feet space. Local entrepreneurs and industrialists, who were trying to diversify into IT and BPO space, were looking forward for investors meet, the release added.
