Malaprabha water project clearance soon: CM DHARAM'S PROMISES

Hubli: Chief Minister N Dharam Singh assured citizens of Hubli-Dharwad here on Monday that he will approve the Rs 176 crore Malaprabha third stage drinking water project soon.

Speaking after inaugurating the platinum jubilee celebrations of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Singh said that the State go vernment was convinced that the project will address the long standing drinking water problem of the twin cities.

Reiterating the government’s stand on the development of North Karnataka, the CM asserted that he was committed to pursue rail projects in the region. There was a need to amend the Central Forest Act to give a green signal for the Hubli-Ankola rail line and the S tate is follo wing the project aggressively , said Singh.

All hurdles related to Hubli Software Technology Park of India were cleared. The coalition government was talking to IT giants of the country . Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata had made up his mind to invest in Hubli-Dharwad, as his company Tata Motors was manufacturing earthmo vers in Dharwad, the CM said.

Speaking on improving Bangalore’s infrastructure, Singh said that work on international airport had started. The government had announced a Rs 491 cror e project to upgrade roads in State capital, he added.

Deputy Chief Minister M P Prakash said that the coalition go vernment had approved investments to the tune of Rs 50,000 crore in the State. The State was growing multi-fold under Dharam’s leadership, he claimed.

Prakash emphasised on development keeping in mind long-term goals. H e called upon K CCI members to play a crucial role in the development of HubliDharwad. Bapuji Education I nstitute honorary secr etary and MLA Shamanoor Shivashankarappa, VRL Group chairman Vijay Sankeshwar and RNS Group of Companies chairman R N Shetty wer e felicitated b y the CM for their contributions to business, industry and social service. Accepting the felicitation, Shivashankarappa said that a single person cannot solve all problems and emerge successful. There should be collective efforts, he stressed.

KCCI had played a vital role. Time and again, it had brought grievances before the government and got them redressed. It should continue the same endeavour in future, he added.

M P Prakash released a souvenir in commemoration of KCCI’s platinum jubilee. Cooperation Minister R V Deshpande, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K P atil, Sports, Y outh Affairs and Minority W elfare Minister Jabbarkhan Honalli also spoke. KCCI president Shankranna Munavalli presided.

Hubli: Clarifying the State Government’s stand on admissions to professional courses in private colleges, Chief Minister N Dharam Singh on Monday reiterated that the State Government would wait till a Central legislation was passed. The State was not considering any legislation in this regard, he added.

Speaking to reporters at the airport here Dharam Singh said that the U nion Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh had already agreed to move a bill in the winter session to end the controversy once for all. Therefore, it would not be viable to pass another law in the State, h added. Singh ruled out any possible confrontation with the judiciary on the issue.

He said that a delegation would be taken to New Delhi, which would meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Arjun Singh, on Sept 1, to pursue the matter . The matter would also be raised at the meeting of chief ministers of all states to be held in first week of Sept, he added. No rethink on metro rail: On the objections raised by the former prime minister H D Deve Gowda on Bangalore Metro Rail project, Singh categorically stated that there was no rethink over the metro rail project. U nion ministry for Urban Development had given a green signal for the project, and assent of the Central Cabinet was awaited, he added.

Gowda’s queries would be addressed and the project would be commissioned by creating consensus among coalition partners, Singh asserted. The coalition government had performed well in the last one year , he claimed.

On the compensation for flood hit areas of North Karnataka, the CM said that the PM and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar had assured that aid would be given to the State on the lines of the tsunami relief model. The State would monitor relief measures so that each victim was benefited, he added.

HUBLI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) relented on the show of black flag but succeeded in staging a dharna against Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh here on Monday.

Ever since Pralhad Joshi, party MP from Dharwad North, had announced plans to stage a black flag demonstration against Mr. Dharam Singh, the police had been trying to persuade the BJP leaders to drop up the plan.

Police pleas ignored

Police continued their efforts even as the BJP workers gathered near the entry gate to the airport because the police did not allow anybody wo did not posses passes.

The BJP leaders, including Mr. Joshi, were firm in going ahead with the demonstration while agreeing not to show black flag.

At one stage, the police offered to permit a couple of them to meet the Chief Minister inside but the BJP leaders refused the offer.

Sit-in strike

The police were welcome to arrest them if they so desired.

But the BJP leaders made it clear and said that they would do a sit-in strike near the entrance and said the police were welcome to remove them.

They refused to heed to the advice of the police not to shout slogans against the Chief Minister.

When the Chief Minister's motorcade from the airport building came near the gate, the BJP workers, led by Mr. Joshi, shouted slogans against the "lethargy" of the Government in taking up the issue of giving forestland for the Hubli-Ankola railway line.

Mr. Dharam Singh got down from the car and walked up to the demonstrators and heard Mr. Joshi. Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs H.K. Patil and Minister for Municipal Administration S.R. Morey who is the in-charge minister of the district were present.

HUBLI: Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh on Monday promised to provide a package of assistance for rebuilding roads in Hubli-Dharwad, which has become necessary after the recent massive demolition taken up by the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation for removing the encroachment.

The Chief Minister, who spoke to presspersons soon after his arrival here, was noncommittal on the question of clearance to the long-pending Rs. 176-crore scheme for augmenting water supply for Hubli-Dharwad. He declined to react to complaints that a number of schemes pertaining to improvement of Hubli-Dharwad were pending with the State Government at the moment.

Mr. Dharam Singh, who arrived here 90 minutes late, was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash, and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K Patil.
