DHARWAD: First ever mini-marathon and freedom walk will be organised by the health centre, Hubli on August 28.

According to the organising secretary Dr Kiran Kulkarni, the 21 km mini-marathon, which was supposed to be held on Aug 14, had to put-off because of the Governor, Chief Minister and other ministers visit in connection with the stone laying ceremony of the High Court bench here.

Now it is scheduled to be flagged off from his clinic near the Laximinarayan temple, at Raviwarpeth, Dharwad at 7 AM on August 28 and will conclude at the health centre, Akshay park, Gokul road, Hubli.

The mini-marathon will be for men, women and children of North Karnataka who are above 16 years of age.

The organisers have plans to extend this event to the state level next year and hope to have a national level run in the coming five years time.

The winners of each category will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 5,000, while the runners-up will get Rs 4,000.

Participants who finish third, fourth and fifth will get a cash prizes of Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 respectively, while the top ten participants 10 will be given a mementoes and certificates and all the participants will be given the merit certificates.

According to Dr Kiran Kulkarni, the freedom walk will commence simultaneously at 9 am from KIMS, Nehru Stadium, Vijayalaxmi Autos, Hosur cross and BDK Industries and will conclude at the health centre, Akshay park. All the participants will be given free T-shirts and caps.

Five coaches and sports promoters, namely, Arun H Patil (gymnastics), Kodaganur (weightlifting), T G Upadhya (international T T umpire), Baba Bhusad (cricket) and Gopalakrishna Hegde (sports journalist) and nine sports persons, namely, J J Shobha (athletics), Sujata Kishore (hockey), Renuka Phadtare (cycling), Dr Kiran Kulkarni (gymnastics), P Manjunath (sepak-takraw), Shivanand Gunjal (represented India in the Para-Olympics), Nitan Handigol and Salim (swimming; both mentally challenged) will be felicitated in the presentation ceremony on the occasion.

Entry fee for the events will be Rs 10 and the entire collections will be donated to ‘Paraspara’ charity for ‘Juvanile diabetics’ patients.

Registration will be open at Dharwad between 5 to 8 pm on August 27 at the scouts and guides, near Court.

Accommodation and medical check-up facilities will be provided to all outstation participants.
