Freedom run, walk to keep the doctor away

Hubli: The much awaited Freedom Run/Walk programme was conducted successfully on Sunday.Men, women, children, physically challenged, sportspersons and senior citizens participated enthusiastically in the Freedom Run and Walk programmes.

The event was organised to create awareness on the importance of health care among the public. It was organised by the Health Centre organisation of Hubli.The Freedom Run (Half Marathon 21 km) was flagged off from Dharwad at 6.30 am, by Headquarter Assistant to DC S Bommanahalli. More than 200 sportspersons took part in the contest.

The run started from Laxminarayana Temple, Dharwad and ended at the Health Centre on Gokul Road in Hubli (enroute-Tolnaka, Vidyagiri, SDM Medical College, Rayapur, Navanagar, Unkal, KMC, Hosur). Volunteers were posted to guide the participants. An ambulance of KIMS and other two vehicles followed the runners all the way.

Winners are:Men: Balakrishna Avalakki secured 1st place, Shivanand 2nd , Rayappa Katagi 3rd, Imam Hussain 4th and Siddappa Shivanur 5th. Women: Asha Barennavar 1st place, Sanmati Dodmani 2nd, Priyanka Kalburgi 3rd, Benazir Badekhan 4th and Bharati Kusugi 5th. The Freedom Walk was flagged off from four centres in Hubli that is KMC, Nehru Stadium, BDK Company unit and Hosur and ended at the Health Centre. Nearly 1,000 people participated in the walk.

Later, sportspersons, coaches and sports promoters including - J J Shobha, Sujata Kishore, Renuka Phadatare, Kiran Kulkarni, P Manjunath, Shivanand Gunjal, Nitin Handigund, Salim, Arun Patil, T G Upadhyay and Gopalkrishna Hegde were felicitated.
