HUBLI: P. Manivannan, Commissioner, Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, said on Friday that the Corporation will spend a major portion of the Rs. 10 crores, which is due from the State Government for handing over the IT Park, for construction of pavements and other traffic amenities.

Addressing presspersons after the completion of the third phase of the demolition drive, Mr. Manivannan said the corporation is likely to receive the amount in September.

He said that already the corporation has with it Rs. 1.5 crore which is being used for pavements and drains. "The corporation and Police Department have jointly set a deadline of November 1 for taking steps streamline traffic. Even if we are unable to meet the deadline, at least there will be visible differences by that time," Mr. Manivannan said. The Commissioner said that though there is no provision for rehabilitation with regard to encroachments, the Corporation is thinking of providing rehabilitation to about 15 families on humanitarian grounds.

Stating that some lapses are bound to happen during such a massive drive, he said the corporation provide give compensation wherever it has erred and caused loss to the public. It has been decided to give Rs. 1.95 lakhs as compensation to the residents of Hebballi Agasi in Dharwad, he said.

VIP route

Narayan Nadamani, Police Commissioner, said the department is planning a "VIP route" bypassing Kittur Chennamma Circle to prevent traffic jams during the visits prominent personalities.

The circle will be made a no-hawking and no-parking zone to ease traffic congestion.

There are also plans for having bypass roads among which the survey for Gabbur Cross to Gadag Road has begun, he added.

Both Mr. Nadamani and Mr. Manivannan thanked the public for their cooperation during the demolition drive.

They said that almost 60 per cent of the encroachments were removed by the people on their own before the third phase of the drive began.

HUBLI: The mother of all anti-encroachment operations in the history of Hubli concluded on Friday, with several commercial buildings on Niligin Road, Club Road, in Keshwapur and New Cotton Market areas coming under the demolition man’s hammer.

HDMC commissioner P Manivannan now plans to remove places of worship encroaching on municipal land before taking up the much-delayed road development project as some shrines have mushroomed right in the middle of roads.

HUBLI: Members of Karnataka State Road Transport Employees Federation will stage a dharna infront of DC’s office in Dharwad on August 30 to protest against the decision to allow private bus operators to shift their operations to the NWKRTC’s new bus terminus, Gokul.

In a press release Dr K S Sharma, president of the federation, asked the chairman of the city infrastructure improvement committee to drop the decision to allow the private bus operators to shift their operations to the new bus-terminus in Hubli.

The decision was not only contravening to the rules and established practices but also suicidal to the interests of NWKRTC. NWKRTC was sustaining a loss of nearly Rs 1 lakh a day because of the Bendre bus operations in Hubli-Dharwad and by allowing them to use corporation’s bus stand in Gokul Road, it would have to suffer further revenue loss.

In the interests of the travelling public, the federation urged the infrastructure committee to drop the above decision, he said.

DHARWAD: University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Directorate of Wheat Research, Karnal (Haryana) and Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, will organise an All India Wheat and Barley Research Workers meet from Aug 28 at UAS, Dharwad.

Co-ordinated wheat and barley research worker’s planners, administrators, extension functionaries from across India and international institutes will participate.

Union Minister of State for Planning M V Rajasekharan will inaugurate the function. Dr Gautam Kalloo, Deputy Director General (CS and Horti) ICAR, New Delhi, will be the chief guest.

Dr M V Rao, retired special director general of ICAR, New Delhi and doyen of Indian wheat research will deliver a special lecture.

Dr S A patil, Vice Chancellor, will preside over the function, according to a press release by University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad.
