HUBLI: A vintage steam engine and coaches hired to shoot a scene for Mani Ratnam’s latest Hindi film, ‘Guru’, starring Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, is expected to arrive at Hubli railway station on Friday evening.

The crew will shoot a song sequence, besides a scene on the moving vintage train, between Somapur and Banapur (19 km) in the Hubli railway division on Saturday and Sunday.

AVRK Sainath, public relations officer, South Western Railway, Hubli, told this website’s newspaper that shooting was scheduled to begin on Friday but was postponed for a day as the diesel locomotive that had to haul the vintage train from Delhi, had halted in Pune due to some technical problems.

The steam engine has been hired from the Railway Museum at Delhi at Rs 1 lakh per day.

Explaining the arrangements made to smoothen rail traffic between Somapur and Banapur section on the day of shooting, Sainath said rail traffic might not be disrupted on Saturday and Sunday on the said lines of the Hubli railway division as Mani Ratnam and his crew had been asked to shoot till it was time for the next train to arrive and then move the steam engine and train to another line. After the scheduled train leaves the station, the steam engine would be brought back to continue the shooting, he added.

Mani Ratnam’s crew has been shooting for the past week in the backdrop of the historical locations of Badami and Aihole, on the banks of a lake in Muchakhandi village near Bagalkot and in Halakatti’s century-old bungalow of Bagalkot.

According to sources, the Somapur railway station has been undergoing a huge makeover to create the scene of 1857.

People in the Somapur-Banapur area are eagerly awaiting to have a glimpse of Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan.

State may get Tata car unit

State may get Tata car unit
DH News Service

From B S Arun

New Delhi: The Tata Motors is understood to be seriously considering a location in Karnataka — either near Mysore or Dharwad – as one of the assembling units for its ambitious small car project.

The car – which the Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata wants to sell at Rs 1 lakh – may hit the Indian roads in 2008 or 2009.

The Tata Motors, which will manufacture perhaps the lowest priced petrol-driven car in the world, is said to have examined several locations in Maharashtra and West Bengal, besides Karnataka. The project may come up on four different locations — three for assembly and one for manufacturing. The Karnataka government was said to have forwarded a plan to locate the project at Mysore to Mr Tata when he visited Bangalore some time ago and the latter had shown interest in it. The other location was Dharwad where the Group’s Telco already holds land. The other plots the company has seen include Pune and Guptamani, near Kharagpur.

The West Bengal government is said to be aggressively pursuing the Tatas as the Tata Steel (which manufactures cold rolled sheet for car body) is located at near

Jamshedpur and Tata Metaliks, which supplies grey iron casting for the chassis, has a plant at Kharagpur. The WB government, sources say, is of the opinion that these two plants could help Tatas cut costs for the small car project.

While the Karnataka government sources confirmed that the Tatas have shown interest to locate a part of the project in the State, a Tata Motors spokesman, speaking to Deccan Herald, said he had no comments on the issue. The small car had been a dream project for Mr Tata. He had stated that although a host of factors like inflation and steel prices may make it difficult to maintain the proposed price tag at the time of the launch, the company hoped to hold on to the price despite that.

The project needs an area of 700 to 1,000 acres (if it is to be located at a single place) and the initial investment is likely to around Rs 1,000 crore. The company wants to project its small car as a direct competitor to Maruti 800 whose standard model now costs over Rs 2 lakh. India’s largest selling car is a 796 cc, three-cylinder vehicle. Tata’s small car will be a 700 cc, Euro IV compliant petrol version, rear-wheel powered vehicle with engine at the back.

Small is beautiful

*It’s for the Tatas’ Rs 1 lakh car

*Two locations — either Mysore or Dharwad

*State has given plan to Ratan Tata

* Bengal too pushing for it

Special package for IT units in Hubli: CM

Special package for IT units in Hubli: CM

DH News Service

Dharwad: Chief Minister H D Kumaaraswamy on Monday informed that an IT investors’ meet will be held in Hubli on May 20 in order to attract the IT companies to establish their units here and also assured them of announcing a special package.

Addressing a news conference at WALMI in Dharwad, he said the district administration had been asked to co-ordinate with Department of Information Technology for holding the IT investors’ meet on a big scale.

Around 100 investors were expected to participate in the proposed meet. The government was aware of the fact that the IT Park had been set up in Hubli but remained vacant till this day. They had decided to sell 50,000 sq ft out of the total two lakh sq ft at a cost of Rs 10 per sq ft as against the present Rs 20 per sq ft, to attract investors to Hubli. The government had been appealing to investors to extend their activities to cities like Hubli, Belgaum, Mangalore and Bijapur. Besides, the government would also recommend to the Centre for declaring Belur Industrial area in Dharwad as special economic zone.

Drinking water

The chief minister also sanctioned Rs 176 crore for Malaprabha III stage water scheme that would solve drinking water problems of Hubli-Dharwad cities.

The Finance Department had been asked to immediately release Rs 25 crore to start the work. The project would be taken up in a phased manner and completed at the earliest. There was no dearth of funds and money would be released whenever required.

Replying to a question, Mr Kumaaraswamy sought to clarify that the present coalition government was not at all responsible in the selection of Bangalore and Mysore cities for Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and said all efforts were being made to impress upon the Centre to include Hubli-Dharwad cities.

The selection of cities was done by the Centre. Recently, he and Law & Parliamentary Affairs Minister Basavaraj Horatti met Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy and requested him to include Hubli-Dharwad cities in the scheme.

Kalasa-Banduri

When his attention was drawn to Kalasa-Banduri canal project, he said its implementation had been delayed because of stubborn attitude of the Goa government.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had sought 15 days time to find out an amicable solution. There was nothing wrong in waiting for 15 days for Dr Manmohan Singh’s reply. An all-party delegation would be taken once again, if needed.
