DHARWAD: University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad will organise the 17th Krishi Mela and national agricultural machinery exhibition at its campus in Dharwad from September 29 to October 2.

Disclosing this to reporters here on Tuesday, Dr S A Patil, Vice Chancellor, UAS, Dharwad said that more than 1.5 lakh farmers, farm women, extension workers, NGOs etc from different areas were expected to participate in this mega event.

In addition to showcasing latest researched technologies, information on hi-tech agriculture, agriculture machinery and equipment, animal and dog show, nutritious recipes prepared from minor millets and pulses, food processing and innovative technologies practised by the farmers would be available.

Watershed model groundnut cultivation in raised beds, increasing ground water levels in borewells, use of spent wash in agriculture, sale of seeds/seedlings and other agriculture inputs would be displayed in mela.

He said during this event the farmer to farmer interaction meet is scheduled as special event on Organic Farming, ‘Integrated Farming System Agri based subsidiary enterprises and farm implements’ ‘Development of agriculture in tank areas’ and on ‘Hi-tech agriculture and horticulture products, market network and cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants’ for the benefit of farmers.

He said ‘best farmer’ and ‘best woman’ farmer for 2004-05 (from 12 northern districts of Karnataka) would be given.

M V Rajashekharana, Minister of State for Planning, will inaugurate the mela.

Deputy Chief Minister M P Prakash, Agricultural Minister Sreenivas Gowdaand others would take part in the mela.

He said cotton scientists had made a breakthrough in the transfer of gene for blue colour from petunia (attractive flowering plant) to cotton to add blue colour to the existing colour spectrum of brown and green shade.
