HUBBALLI: Finally, the authorities here have decided to take on head-on the mess caused by traffic jams on Airport Road, popularly known as Gokul Road.

The National Highways department and PWD will jointly take up a project to convert the present two-lane road into a four-lane stretch from Hosur to Airport. Giving this information, Dharwad (North) MP Prahlad Joshi said the design has been finalised and work is expected to be taken up within the next two months. The whole project is estimated to cost Rs 9 crore, he added. He said the frequent traffic jams on Gokul Road had become a very serious problem that required an lasting solution. Four-laning of the road appeared to be the only viable solution, he added.

According to him, The project has been finalised by the centre and state government to upgrade the 5.6-km stretch between Hosur Circle and Airport. The state export promotion committee already accepted the proposed Rs 9 crore joint project in August. A sum of Rs 4.5 crore will be released under the central government's Assistance to States for Infrastructure Development for Exports (ASIDE) scheme and the state PWD will pay Rs 4.5 crore.

The state government should immediately release at least Rs 2.7 crore of its share to start the process of issuing notifications and tender. "The government should release the funds on a priority as a delay on its part will result in diversion of funds.
