MUMBAI: Air Deccan has announced the launch of new flights between Hubli and Mumbai. Flights on this route will commence operations on October 30 and a 48-seater ATR 42-500 aircraft will be deployed on the route.

Cap. G. R. Gopinath, Managing Director, Air Deccan, said, "We have been operating for three years to Hubli and high loads (about 81 per cent) on this sector coupled with demand from passengers for more connectivity to this region encouraged us to launch the new flight.'' Further, Air Deccan is working closely with the tourism department to open up Bellary Airport and will commence operations from there. Connectivity to Bellary will open up access to the heritage site of Hampi.

DHARWAD: The Karnataka government will set up a research centre for DNA laboratory in the PG department of Applied Genetics in Karnataka University here, at a cost of Rs 3 crore.

The centre would work towards preventing certain hereditary diseases and finding out the reasons for such diseases. Acting vice-chancellor A Murigeppa on Wednesday told reporters that the DNA research centre would start functioning within six months.

He also listed out various achievements of the university, in what appeared to be a bid to undo the impression created by the negative publicity and controversies dogging it in recent times.

Highlighting the achievements of the teaching and non-teaching staff, Murigeppa informed that S R Binamdar, reader in the department of physics, had been awarded the prestigious Dr C V Raman Young Scientist award for his outstanding contribution in the field of science and technology.

He said Jagadeesh Gudgur, lecturer in the department of geology and senior assistant A Y Goudannavar had participated in the sports meet held at Kuala Lumpur and won bronze medals.

The acting V-C said that the UGC had accorded autonomous status to P C Jabin Science College in Hubli and Lingaraj College in Belgaum.

The university has sought financial assistance from the state government for construction of two hostels, one each for girls and boys.

It has also sent a proposal to UGC to establish a central computing facility at a cost of Rs 65 lakh. Murigeppa said the University would host the South Zone inter-university kabaddi tournament for men from September 27 to October 1.

Outlining the performance of the National Service Scheme unit, he said the university had already conducted 140 special camps for volunteers.

DHARWAD: B Sriramulu, Tourism Minister, has made it clear that the works on development of Sadhankeri Lake will begin from November 1 after laying foundation stone.

Disclosing this to reporters here on Tuesday, after inspecting Sadhankeri Lake, Sriramulu said that adequate financial assistance required for the overall development of the lake would be released from the tourism department.

He said, “I am pained to see the pathetic condition of Sadhankeri Lake, which had once inspired renowned poet Dr D R Bendre to write down excellent poetry works.”

“I have taken this issue seriously and I am determined to restore a life into the lake by converting it into a tourist place,” he added.

He said that Tourism Ministry would not only release adequate funds for the development of Sadhankeri lake, but also would provide sufficient fund for the improvement of the museum being opened in D R Bendre National Trust at Sadhankeri, here.

He informed that a committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner consisting of officers of the district tourism department would soon be constituted to submit exact estimation of the amount required for the overall development of this lake after conducting a proper survey on entire Sadhankeri Lake and Bendre Bhavan.

Replying to the demand of appointing a special officer to prepare a comprehensive estimation plan for the development of the lake and the Trust, the Minister said that the Commissioner of Tourism Department and the principal secretary would soon be sent to this place for further inspection of lake.

If they suggested to appoint a special officer, steps would be taken to appoint a special officer, he said.

He said as part of beautification of Sadhankeri Lake, a proper fencing, boating facility and fountain would be provided to attract large number of people to this lake.

LUXURY ON WHEELS: The Minister said that on the line of ‘Place on wheels’ project in Rajasthan, the State Government had planned to implement ‘Luxury on Wheels’ project in the State from next month.

In this project, a train would travel to all important tourist places in the State. Arrangements would be made to stop this train in Dharwad to enable people to have a glimpse of Bendre Bhavan and rare collection of Dr D R Bendre’s poetry work at museum, he said.

He disclosed that there was a Rs 1.5 crore proposal for the improvement of Unkal lake which would be sanctioned soon.

Later, the Minister inspected the Kelgeri Lake. He promised to announce his plans for the development of Kelgeri Lake on November 1 during his next visit to lay foundation stone to begin works on improvement of Sadhakeri Lake.

Dr M M Kalburgi, Chairman of the Bendre Trust, Dr Bidarkundi, Prof Sadanand Kanavalli, Dr Raghavendra Rao and others were present at the press conference.

BELGAUM: Belgaum, Hubli and Kolhapur airports will be upgraded soon, said Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel.

Speaking at a function organised at the KLES hospital here on Tuesday, Patel said the Civil Aviation Ministry had plans to upgrade the above mentioned airports.

However, priority would be given to Belgaum airport as it was one of the oldest and important civil airports of the country, he said, adding that upgradation of Belgaum airport was necessary, as the Air Force Training centre and MLIRC were situated here.

He said that the Bangalore International Airport would be developed, keeping the needs that would arise after 50 years.

Speaking to reporters at the Sambra airport here on Tuesday, the Minister said almost all the airports would be developed with modern techniques. The needs and the requirements of 2020, would be implemented in 2010, he added.

He said the government had planned to develop the airports of Gulbarga, Hasan and Mysore and added that from October 1, a direct flight from Mangalore to the Gulf would be started from Mangalore.

Minister Sriramulu, MP Suresh Angadi, MLC Prabhakar Kore, former minister R V Deshpande and others were present. Deputy Commissioner Shalini Rajneesh said Belgaum had all the opportunities to be developed as the second capital of the state.
