DHARWAD: Agricultural Insurance Corporation (AIC) has agreed to send a team of officials to the district to settle pending insurance claims of farmers in Dharwad district pertaining to 2003-04.

The team is expected to coordinate with branch managers to finalise the list of claimants and sort out problems, including cases of missing names of those who had paid the premium, the delay in the payment of insurance and other issues on the spot.

This was decided at a meeting convened by Deputy Commissioner M.S. Srikar here on Tuesday in which AIC nominees, representatives of banks, elected representatives, farmers' representatives and officials participated.

Mr. Srikar said that since nothing has come of the efforts in this regard so far, it was decided to request the AIC to depute a team to the district, for which the corporation has agreed. AIC had given a new format to furnish information and bank managers had requested for some time to comply with the same. "We will sort out the problem by the end of this month," Mr. Srikar said.

Mr. Srikar said there appears to be some differences in the list prepared by banks and of the AIC. While some cases have been cleared through correspondence, the bulk of the problem remains to be solved.

The Joint Director of Agriculture, Dharwad, has been named as nodal officer to coordinate the efforts, Mr. Srikar said.
